H2Boost interactive session: Accelerating the UK's biohydrogen and carbon capture technologies through waste innovation

In the push to decarbonise UK industry, biomass and bioenergy play essential roles. However, our island nation faces a unique challenge: limited domestic biomass resources. This means we must be incredibly smart about how we use our available feedstocks, developing sustainable processes that maximise efficiency while minimising waste and carbon emissions.

Enter H2Boost - an innovative collaboration that brings together experts across biological, process, and engineering sciences. We're pioneering something extraordinary: the first large-scale demonstration of biohydrogen production that combines dark fermentation with anaerobic digestion and biogenic carbon capture.

What makes our approach special? H2Boost technologies transform low-value waste streams and industrial byproducts - materials that would otherwise go unused - into clean hydrogen and methane. But we don't stop there. Our process uses cyanobacteria and microalgae to capture carbon dioxide, creating an integrated system that unlocks both bioenergy production and valuable chemical precursors from challenging feedstocks.

H2Boost is part of the Hydrogen BECCS Innovation Programme funded through the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP). This aims to address the urgent need for distributed clean hydrogen production and H2Boost has achieved remarkable progress. In just 16 months, Phase 2 of our project reached a significant milestone: successfully designing, building, and operating an integrated plant that combines biogas production with biogenic carbon capture, including the UK's first demonstration of large-scale dark fermentation for biohydrogen production.
