Dr Loïc de Carvalho has dedicated his career to plant-based new product development, across his BSc, MSc, PhD, and Post-Doctoral research. His expertise covers a wide range of natural resources, including microalgae, seaweed, fruits, vegetables, and co-products from the processing industry. With a strong focus on product discovery and material innovation, he develops plant-based solutions for the food and personal care sectors.

Specializing in phenolic compounds and polysaccharides, Loïc integrates plant metabolomics, bioprocessing, and advanced processing technologies to create innovative solutions, bridging the gap from benchtop research to commercial scale.

In January 2023, he joined Biomara Ltd, a seaweed biorefinery start-up, as Head of R&D. He leads product development and the company’s scientific program, ensuring that new products are backed by quality scientific evidence. He also fosters academic collaborations through funded projects, driving innovation and product valorisation.

Loïc is a co-creator of Biomara’s biorefinery bioprocessing technology, which is patent-pending and has enabled the production of a range of high-grade fucoidans and a novel food ingredient, now being launched to market.
