Abdelrahman Zaky
Dr Abdelrahman Zaky is the Founder and CEO of MariCura, a climate-tech and blue biotechnology startup developing a circular, zero-waste seaweed biorefinery to produce sustainable, high-protein ingredients for food and feed.
An industrial biotechnology leader with deep expertise in fermentation technology, microbiology, bioenergy, and biomass valorisation, Abdelrahman focuses on translating biological systems into scalable, commercially viable production platforms that address climate and resource constraints — eliminating dependence on arable land and freshwater while strengthening marine ecosystems.
He conducted his PhD in Bioenergy and Fermentation Technology at the University of Nottingham and has built an international academic and industrial career spanning Cairo University, the University of Nottingham and the University of Edinburgh, alongside industry roles across Scotland and England leading fermentation development and pilot-scale innovation. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and regularly presents at international bioeconomy and industrial biotechnology conferences.
Abdelrahman is former Managing Editor of Biomass & Bioenergy (Elsevier), an elected member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Young Academy of Scotland (YAS), and elected Chair of Early Career Researchers for the Supergen Bioenergy Hub.
Through MariCura, he is advancing a regenerative model for climate-positive protein production while supporting sustainable seaweed farming and marine ecosystem resilience.
