Cindy Smith

Cindy Smith is Professor of Environmental Engineering and Microbiology in the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. Her research lies at the interface of environmental engineering and microbiology, where she uses advanced molecular tools and deep expertise in microbial processes to understand how microbial communities function in natural and engineered environments, with an emphasis on ecosystem functioning and water quality.

She applies this fundamental understanding of environmental microbiology to tackle real‑world water challenges, spanning sustainable water treatment and water quality management. Her work focuses on developing low‑energy, resilient, and environmentally responsible treatment solutions.

Professor Smith holds a Royal Academy of Engineering–Scottish Water Research Chair in Biofiltration by Biological Design, leading efforts to deliver sustainable, low-cost drinking water treatment technologies for rural Scotland and beyond. She also serves as Chair of the International Water Association’s Microbial Ecology and Water Engineering (MEWE) Specialist Group.
